When it comes to masonry, one thing is clear; you should hire professional masonry contractors. A local handyman may perform good work but that work may not be up to code. What are Masonry Contractors?

As you may or may not know, a chimney is constructed of a variety of masonry and metal materials. This typically includes brick, mortar, concrete, stone, iron, and steel. Masonry materials take a pounding from temperature changes and patterns including extreme hot and cold temperatures, heavy winds, and direct contact with sometimes overwhelming amounts of water. Weather can damage flue linings, loosen masonry materials and cause obstructions that are not good for your chimney and fireplace.

Masonry contractors like Masters Services, offer protection, repairs, and rebuilds. Regular maintenance of your chimney is critical to prevent major damage, deterioration, and repairs that can be very expensive.

    Chimney Waterproofing

Masonry chimneys are constructed of a combination of masonry and metal materials. With most masonry materials, direct and constant contact with water can cause an adverse reaction on a chimney. Regular maintenance of a chimney is recommended to prevent damage, deterioration, and costly repairs. Waterproofing service can aid in the reduction of chimney leaks and deterioration.

Chimney Cap Repairs and Chimney Cap Fabrications

A chimney cap protects your chimney masonry from damage and keeps wildlife out. A full-coverage chimney cap keeps out the rainwater that erodes the chimney structure and components. Masters Services fabricates their very own chimney cap. These chimney caps carry a limited lifetime warranty and are made from a 24 gauge flat sheet of metal and each features an animal-proofed screen. Full coverage means that these chimney caps cover the entire chimney top and the first row of brick. This helps reduce the need for chimney repairs.

    Chimney Dampers

A chimney damper is installed on the top of the flue and features a chain coming down into the firebox. Top sealing dampers seal out any rain blowing into the chimney cap. More importantly, top dampers seal in the hot or cold air escaping from the HVAC system as well as keeping the outside heat or cold from entering a home. Combined with a full coverage chimney cap makes your chimney ready for all types of weather in Dallas County.

    Mortar Crowns

A chimney should be solid on top with a bed of smooth mortar holding the chimney top together. A coating can be applied to seal the mortar crown and once sealed, the chimney top should never deteriorate or leak.

    Brick Repair

Repairing a chimney crack is called tuckpointing. This involves drilling out any cracks and filling them in with as close as possible matching aged mortar. A good job means that the eye cannot see that a repair was made on a chimney. Oftentimes, tuckpointing the entire chimney is necessary to stop a chimney from leaking.

    Chimney Flashing

Chimney flashing is the seal that prevents moisture from entering your home at the point where a chimney meets the roof. Flashing should be secured to the chimney and not bowing out. It should be free from rust or holes. Correctly applied to flash creates a bond that forms a tight seal from moisture entering the roof, attic, or walls and thereby, avoiding any potential future water leak requiring chimney repairs.
