Is there anything you can do yourself?
There are a few things when it comes to plumbing that homeowners can do on their own to fix minor troubles around their home. One of the most important steps to know is how to shut off your water in the case of an emergency. Typically the shut off valve will be located near the front of your home, normally hidden in the garden bed. It will normally be somewhere near the main clean out pipe and near a hose bib (a fancy name for the outdoor spigots). Locating this when you are not dealing with an emergency is important so that in a moment of dilemma you can easily get to it and shut it off.
It is also a good idea to have a water meter key in the case that you have to shut your water off from the meter itself in an emergency.
Once you have the water shut off the best thing to do is to contact a plumber for help in handling whatever problem you have going on. There are a few plumbing problems that you can handle on your own at home but in most cases the potential to cause more trouble than you originally had is pretty high. Getting out an experienced plumber will help you not only to get the right answers to your questions but to also get any troubles repaired.
Too little hot water?
In our house there was a constant race for who got the hot showers. If anyone took a slightly longer shower everyone’s times were adjusted or they had to take cool or cold showers. We finally “broke down” and called out a plumber. They preformed a flush and maintenance on our water heater and found that there were some needed repairs. Once these were fixed there was no longer the shower scramble for hot water.
There is quite a bit of wasted money in not getting your existing plumbing problems repaired. A leaking faucet or toilet can quickly escalate your water bills by $10-100’s of dollars a month.
